ecoReef donates 100% of profits for reef conservation

Where does the donated money come from?
ecoReef gets the money we donate by selling advertising and ecoReef stuff (cups, shirts, etc.) and via sponsorships. So technically this money came from YOU, marine aquaria hobbyists... then paid to producers of marine aquaria products and retailers... and then paid to us, so that we can donate it.

So when we say "Marine Aquaria... fuelling reef conservation" ...we really mean it!

So thank you all! ...Marine Aquaria hobbyists, producers, wholesalers and retailers.
With your support, we will be able to make a significant and measurable contribution to the World's Coral Reefs.

...and yes! ...absolutely! ...you can be proud of that!

Where does ecoReef donate the money?
From now until the end of 2008, we will donate profits to IYOR2008, an international campaign with liaison to the United Nations, that is raising funds to conserve the World's coral reefs. The IYOR campaign finishes in 2008, therefore from 2009 onwards, we will donate 100% of our profits to ICRAN, the International Coral Reef Action Network.

ICRAN is a network, established by the United Nations, of many of the world's leading coral reef science and conservation organizations. ICRAN coordinates resources so that they translate into on-the-ground actions throughout the world's major coral reef regions.

What is the donated money used for?
Money donated to IYOR is administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. At the end of 2008, some of the world's most respected coral reef scientists and conservationists will meet to come up with a priority list. Then the list will be made public as a "Request for Proposals", where scientist and conservationists from around world are invited to submit proposals for projects to achieve the goals from the priority list. All submitted proposals enter a competition where coral reef scientists and experts (independent and anonymous to the proposals) review all proposals and decide who are the winners of the competition. The IYOR fund is then divided, among the winners, to carry on with their proposed projects in reef conservation.

From 2009 onwards, we will donate our funds to ICRAN, where they will be divided in the following two categories:

(1) No-strings-attached funds: To be used to advance ICRAN's own projects according to their own agenda and priority list.

(2) Targeted funds: To be used to fund entire projects to foster the sustainablility of the Marine Aquaria industry.
Projects exclusively funded by ecoReef (using target funds) will need to fall in one of theses two tiers:

(a) Basic research projects to forward the sustainable aquaculture of marine ornamental species and live rock.

(b) Capacity building projects to foster sustainable aquaculture of marine ornamental species and live rock, and/or the use of eco-friendly and sustainable fishing practices. Priority will be given to projects that focus on communities, within developing Countries, whose livelihood depends on the marine aquaria industry.

NOTE: We will not start funding entire projects (category 2 above) until ecoReef grows enough to maintain them long-term. In the meantime, all our funds will be donated through our no-string-attached channel (category 1 above).

Can you be more specific? Do you donate net or gross profit?
Net. This means we pay our expenses (salaries, bills, taxes, etc.)... all else is donated.

How long does ecoReef plan to donate 100%? When is this campaign going to finish?
Although ecoReef reserves the right to modify their policies without notice, we believe that reef conservation requires constant, sustained and long-term help... and we plan to do just that.

Our 100%-profit donation policy is here to stay. Indefinitely.
